Fall is quickly approaching and weather forecasts are calling for a harsh winter so don’t get caught in bad weather. There are plenty of weather apps available to help you prepare for rain, snow, sleet or sunshine. Below is a list of some of our favorite sites.

This is a free option that gives you plenty of weather information including extended forecasts, hourly forecasts and maps. It’s a well designed app with plenty of solid features. Accuweather forecasts for 2.7 million locations. It has forecasts for the next 15 days updated every hour, weather videos, lifestyle forecasts and weather radar for all of North America with worldwide satellite overlaying interactive Google Maps. Free in the app store.

This app is a longtime favorite of Android users and was one of the first full featured weather apps. It includes weather forecasts, severe weather alerts, widgets and even things like live weather and traffic cams so you can see the weather. Free in the app store.

Google Now
Google Now will send you periodic weather updates, alerts and information. You can even ask for the weather and it will show you what’s going on. It’s not a dedicated weather app but it offers enough for most people who just want to know what’s going on outside. It’s free and already integrated in most phones.

The Weather Channel
This long time authority on weather offers forecasts, alerts, radar and more. It provides solid weather information. It has been updated with support for real-time alerts for rain, snow and lightning and, already provided alerts for severe weather, pollen, breaking news and daily precipitation forecast.

This is one of my favorite apps. It’s a free app that looks at your location and pops up a map showing you any storms in your area. It provides markers indicating what direction the storms are heading. It also gives a current and hourly temperature as well as the daily and weekly forecast. If you spend a lot of time on the water, you can upgrade Storm and use it on your boat.

Go Weather Forecast and Widgets
A long time favorite of Android users, this app ranks high on users lists. It has widgets, forecasts and alerts. It also offers various sytles of weather widgets which have more than 1000 personalized themes and wall papers. You can change which weather provider you want to use and it’s free.

Weather Underground
This app takes forecasting to the streets where it relies on a network of over 30,000 personal and amateur weather stations to deliver local weather forecasting. It allows crowd reporting so you can verify forecasts. A detailed weather map allows you to apply a variety of information overlays. You can also receive severe weather alerts, meteorological data notifications and hourly up to 10 day forecasts. It’s free.

The best thing to do is to download a couple of apps and try them out. You can always drop them and go to another. You can see samples of the features of all of these by going to the app store and looking at them before you download.
